Title Fall of Man, Fall of Shame, or Coming of Age? Interdisciplinary Readings of the Paradise Narrative in Gen 2-3
Description The paradise narrative in Gen 2:4b-3:24 is one of the most prominent texts of the Bible and its historical significance cannot be overestimated. Creation-theologically and ecologically, anthropologically and hamartiologically, it is a heavyweight. It continues to shape the theological gender discourse to this day. Yet it is often more its reception in painting and music, in literature and film that shapes our understanding of this narrative than a thorough historical-critical or (systematic-)theological exegesis and its philosophical adaptations, especially in the Enlightenment.
The interdisciplinary seminar will be able to focus on only a small but representative part of this equally great and momentous history of interpretation. The first half of the seminar will be devoted to a careful study of the Hebrew text, beginning with the students' own translations (or comparisons of translations if they have no knowledge of Hebrew) and in discussion with commentaries. The second half offers space for dogmatic, gender-perspective and philosophical readings. This will focus especially on the shift in perception of Gen 3 from a Fall to a Fall of Shame story. Throughout, the seminar leaders will introduce literary texts (poetry and prose) and iconographic motifs at the beginning of the sessions.
The course plan and literature are already posted on Ilias.
The interdisciplinary seminar is creditable in the OT, in Dogmatics, as interdisciplinary and in the Master Minor Gender & Religion. The Hebraicum is a prerequisite for credit in the OT or as an interdisciplinary seminar.
Highly recommended for preparation:
Phyllis Trible, God and Sexuality in the Old Testament, Gütersloh 1993, 89-168. If possible, translate Gen 2:4b-3 already or compare different translations! Please choose a recent historical-critical commentary to accompany you throughout the semester. Literature recommendations beyond the seminar source texts will be given in the first seminar sessions.
