Title Therapeutic factors of psychotherapy
Description Psychotherapy is an effective intervention for coping with psychological problems and burden. However, the full potential of psychotherapy is currently not tapped. An essential condition for increasing the efficacy and effectiveness of psychotherapy would be its personalized application tailored to the individual problem conditions, potential and resources of the single patient. This in turn would require precise cognizance of the therapeutic processes and mechanisms of change. While the efficacy and effectiveness of psychotherapy is no longer questioned, the question of how it works remains largely unanswered.
The seminar provides a comprehensive and well-founded overview of the therapeutic factors of psychotherapy currently discussed in research. In addition, the associated controversies and open questions are addressed. In particular, the so-called common therapeutic factors described in the literature, such as establishing a trusting cooperative therapeutic alliance, promoting motivation for change and expectations for improvement, activating resources, encouraging problem confrontation, mindfulness and corrective emotional experiences, fostering problem clarification, cognitive restructuring, consistent self-narration, problem coping and mastery experiences as wells embodiment processes such as synchronization are reviewed. At the same time, the current research position of evidence-based method- and disorder-specific therapeutic factors is presented. Furthermore, the debate on the contrast between the specific ingredients model, referred to as the medical model, on the one hand and the common factors model, called the contextual model, on the other is examined. Finally, current integrative psychotherapy approaches such as technical eclecticism, methodological assimilation, psychotherapy integration based on common therapeutic factors as well as theoretical integration efforts are presented and their limits and significance for psychotherapy practice and training discussed.
