Title Scientific methods in ecology and evolution, lecture with practical
Description Mandatory for BSc 3rd year Ecology and Evolution. Registration deadline 15 September in ILIAS. Registration is binding.

This course aims to: 1) review the main concepts in sampling and experimental design for the life sciences; and 2) show students how different approaches can be used to address different scientific questions in ecology and evolution. The course begins by an introduction to sampling and experimental design. It is followed by presentations of the research activities (research questions; methods (statistical, theoretical, laboratory, field), sampling and experimental design used to address the questions; results and findings) of each of the seven research groups in the IEE. The students will read and discuss scientific papers produced by the IEE research groups that illustrate how various methods, as well as sampling and experimental designs, are used to answer specific questions.
