Formerly: Quantitative Analysis of Trade and Investment Policy
The lecturer: Dr. Octavio Fernández‐Amador. Postdoc Senior Researcher. World Trade Institute, University of Bern.
Course objective: This is a course on quantitative analysis of international trade and investment. The course aims at providing students with the state of the art in econometric techniques for the analysis of international trade and foreign direct investment, and related policies. In this course, we will analyze the different techniques currently in use for the estimation of one of the most successful empirical econometric models, the gravity model. The gravity model has been applied to trade, investment, cross-country financial flows, and migration flows. Notably, the main estimation techniques using either cross-sectional or panel data will be studied, paying attention to the concept and modelling of multilateral resistance and trade costs, and the specific modelling of trade and investment agreements. For that purpose, we will study the model structure and estimation techniques, and analyze different applications based on academic articles.
Readings: The material taught in the course will be based primarily on journal articles, book chapters and the lecture slides. Access to these materials will be provided in ILIAS, journal articles can also be accessed from the library of the University of Bern.
Grading: Students will be graded based on participation in class (10%) and a take-home assignment, which will be presented during the day of presentations (30%) and delivered afterwards in the form of a term paper (60%). Class attendance is mandatory. The take-home assignments will be carried out in small groups or individually. The specific assignment will be delivered by the lecturer in due time. Students will be given a sufficient period of time to do, present, and submit their assignment back to the lecturer for correction.
