Title |
Evidence-Based Psychotherapy for Older People |
Description |
The portion of over-64 is rising, not only in the industrial countries but also in the developing countries. Even though in terms of mental health this age group compared to other age cohorts doesn’t show any remarkable advantages or any obvious disadvantages, their psychological disorders are definitively undertreated, without having any different distributions of the related problems. Furthermore, if they undergo treatment due to psychological problems, they get medication more often. What are the reasons for this difference? Is it because the image of ageing is still mainly negative, practitioners do not know enough about the bio-psycho-social conditions of older adults to induce the proper psychotherapy, the effectiveness through psychotherapeutical practices is still strongly undervalued, or because the financial models of the health care system do not cover the demographical changes yet? In any case, the demands on psychotherapy have been generally growing in recent years. As a result, people doubtlessly need a growing number of skilled clinical gerontopsychologists. Such experts are generally expected to be able to treat the elderly patients sufficiently well, in order that the patients’ features due to their age or their disorder are not neglected and their needs and demands are seriously cared about.
Learning outcome: According to these considerations, the participants will get to know, to understand and to discuss the following topics:
1) psychological theories and concepts regarding emotional well-being, emotion-cognition links, cognitive plasticity, social support, age stereotypes, etc.
2) psychological interventions for depression/anxiety disorders in late life and dementia – diagnostics, case formulation and treatments according to the age- and disorder-specific model of psychotherapy with the elderly (ADS-MP) and the Contextual, Adult Lifespan Theory for Adapting Psychotherapy (CALTAP) model
Through this, the participants will attain their first toolkit for working in the clinical gerontopsychological area. In addition, students are given different possibilities to get their credits. As a further goal, we will produce together an information booklet and a series of posts covering the main topics in evidence-based psychotherapy for older people. |
