Title Seminar: New Data Sources for Tourism Research
Description Empirical research on topics in the tourism sector demands data as in all other economic sectors. This concerns both supply data as well as demand data. Both data can be challenging to collect since tourists unlike consumers in other industries do not consume a homogeneous bundle of goods, but rather individual bundles provided by different suppliers. Official statistics like the hotel overnight stays (HESTA) only cover a small part of the actual touristic demand. Beyond the pure estimation of the quantitative demand also qualitative data like guests’ satisfaction is of certain interest.
Since the local touristic supply is usually composed of many different firms that also change over time, it is neither easy to collect data on the local touristic supply.
On top of these difficulties, other market data like prices are neither directly observed.
Yet, new data sources provide promising approaches to address these data issues: Online marketplaces (e.g. booking.com), social media platforms (e.g. Twitter), or open source databases (e.g. openstreetmap.org). While some of these data sources provide an application programming interface (API) for data collection others demand web scraping techniques to collect data.
In this seminar, students learn how to connect to such data bases via API or how to scrape data from these sources. Furthermore, they learn how to process such data using cleaning techniques up to simple natural language processing (NLP).
In their seminar paper students exploit one such data source to address a specific touristic question that cannot be addressed using traditional sources.
