Title BA-Seminar SP3 - Typ2: An Introduction to Contemporary Arab Cinema
Description This course aims to enrich the student's understanding of the contemporary Arab World through the lens of cinema, as it does not only reflect reality but also creates the space to question and criticize it. By focusing on the concept of "representations," we analyze different factors that are reshaping the current contemporary Arab identity. Even though this list in not conclusive, we focus in particular on the following factors: The "Arab-Spring", political activism, gender, classism, colonization, and space.

The course is divided into an introduction and five main thematic units. In the introduction, we will focus on how to read and analyze the artistic production through the lens of semiology and content analysis. We will also learn how to write a film review.

The first unit deals with mapping the Arab World through the lens of cinema, focusing on how the movies and the archive reflect Arab realities.

The second unit deals with the cinema as a political tool. We will look on the effects of the "Arab- Spring" on cinema (both the form and the content), on censorship, and how the movies play a role in both resistance, and in the preservation of the collective Arab memory.

In the third unit we cover both gender representations and activism. We look at feminists cinema, representation of masculinity (both hegemonic and non-hegemonic), and queer cinema.

The fourth unit covers how capital money and funds reshape cinema's content. We will look at the orientalist gaze, the role of festivals, and on how cinema may be a new form of colonization.

In the last unit, we will look on the changes that are currently taking place in the in the Arabic Gulf, and at how cinema is playing a role in spreading an understanding of the Gulf as both modern and open.

Please also note that this course is accompanied by a tutorial led by Andrea Birrer (Wednesday 10-12), and that attending both course and tutorial is highly recommended.

N.B.: The course will begin the second week of the semester (March 2).
