Title |
Molecular population genetics, research practical |
Description |
Block course according to special programme. 21.02.2023-09.03.2023. Weeks 1-3. Registration deadline 1. February in ILIAS.
The practical provides an introduction to the generation and analysis of molecular population genetics data. Students will receive hands-on training in different methods of DNA-extraction, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) techniques and how they can be adapted, Sanger-sequencing of DNA, analyses of fragment length polymorphisms (microsatellites) and the use of public data bases in molecular population genetics research projects.
The students will then be introduced to the statistical analysis of molecular data using the software package Arlequin. We shall also review basic probability theory and theory of tests, introduce coalescent theory, as well as present methods to estimate allele and haplotype frequencies, patterns of genetic structure, inference of past demography from genetic data, and genome scans for selection. |
