Title |
Materilaity I: pottery and metallurgy |
Description |
The course offers an insight into the materiality of objects made of ceramics and metal that appear in finds from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. The focus is on the production, use and disposal as well as recycling of things. There are traces of "object biographies" that can be discerned in archaeological finds: What raw materials were used? Where did they come from? What techniques were used to turn them into finished objects? What could the things have been used for? What can we say about their disposal, deposit or further processing? These topics will be investigated using archaeological finds (working with material from collections) as well as made accessible through experimental archaeology (visiting a blacksmith's and a potter's workshop, etc.). The aim is to gain an initial insight into possible theoretical and methodological approaches to materiality and material analyses. A special focus is on measuring the chemical composition of finds with the help of portable energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis (p-XRF). |
