Nearly 90% of all firms worldwide are family firms and outnumber nonfamily firms in their contribution to global economic activity and employment. Examples of Swiss family firms include, among others, Swatch, Roche, Kühne+Nagel, Emil Frey Group, and Schindler. International well-known family firms include Walmart, Louis Vuitton, Ferrero, H&M, L'Oréal, BMW, and Red Bull. The working environment in family firms is typically characterized by sustainable management, a positive atmosphere, and a wide range of personal development opportunities. However, managing family firms can be more challenging than nonfamily firms, as family considerations add further complexity to a business. This course uses the Harvard Case Study Method to teach family business management. Students will dive deep into the challenges of family firms as well as the decision-making concepts of nonfamily and owner-family managers. Management methods and tools provide the theoretical basis for solving the case studies. Some methods may have already been introduced to the students in other courses, and this course will build and focus on their application. Other methods may be newly introduced. Overall, this course combines state-of-the-art family business theory and practice-oriented cases that delve into operational and strategic topics relevant to family businesses and their stakeholders.
