Title |
Ecology and Conflict in Palestine/Israel |
Description |
Since at least the early 20th century, Palestine's natural environment was incorporated into the brewing conflict between Jewish settlers and Palestinian locals.
This seminar will focus on ecology, environmentalism, and questions of sustainability in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As an uneven conflict, the uses and abuses of ecological concerns will highlight the inherent ambiguities in the environmental movement itself and in how it has emerged in different spaces.
We will ask sets of questions to reflect both on the potentials and pitfalls of environmentalism in Palestine/Israel. For example: What is the relationship between nation and nature and between ecology and conflict? How have ecological concerns shaped the conflict and how does the conflict shape environmental action in the region? How have the environmental imageries of each group developed in relation to each other? Can environmentalism be apolitical? Can ecological concerns triumph over national agendas?
Our perspective will be both historical and contemporary. We will discuss current ecological concerns informed by how these concerns developed historically (environmentally, culturally, socially, and economically). We will focus on topics such as technology, agriculture, plants and trees, food, animals, waste, and water. Our discussions will be based on academic literature in addition to the work of journalists, activists, and NGOs, short films, and long films. Film sessions will include an hour-long in-class viewing followed by a class discussion. |
