Title |
Comparative theology as a guide in the world of religions |
Description |
How can a theology of religions in the future be designed respectfully and attentively towards the otherness of other religions and at the same time be theologically argumentatively appealing? Beyond and in critical confrontation with pluralistic and inclusivistic, exclusivistic and superioristic determinations of relations, comparative theology has been going its own, convincing ways in the scientific discourse of religions for the last 20 years.
In the first part of the course, we will look at the program, the (philosophical) foundations, the methods, criteria, attitudes, and goals of comparative theology, especially (but not only) with the texts of Klaus von Stosch, the main representative of comparative theology in the German-speaking world. In the second part, we will use material dogmatic case studies (from Christology, the doctrine of God, and anthropology) to address concrete challenges to comparative theology. What changes in the respective Christian motive and argument by including the texts of other religions? Is the dictum confirmed that who only knows Christianity does not know it?
The exercise will involve reading a number of texts from the following book, which is available online through the university library but is also recommended for purchase:
Klaus von Stosch, Komparative Theologie als Wegweiser in der Welt der Religionen, Paderborn et al. 2012. These texts are not additionally posted on Ilias. Only the additional reference texts can be found there. A preliminary course plan will be posted on Ilias by early February.
For preparation (we will refer to the text in the 1st session): Klaus von Stosch, Komparative Theologie als Herausforderung für die Theologie des 21. Jahrhunderts, in: Zeitschrift für Katholische Theologie 130, 2008, 401-422; also available online: https://www.jstor.org/stable/24170723?sid=primo#metadata_info_tab_contents. |
