Jede Gesellschaft hat ihre Feste und bestimmte Praktiken des Feierns. Feste sind mit ihren Festkalendern Orientierungspunkte einer Gruppe. In der Antike überwiegen religiös motivierte Anlässe bei weitem über profane. Insofern haben Feste und Feiern meist auch etwas mit Kult zu tun. In der Vorlesung werden beispielhaft Feste aus verschiedenen antiken Kulturen mit ihren jeweiligen religiösen Grundlagen und ihren Ausdrucksformen vorgestellt, wie sie sich aus Text- und Bildquellen, aber auch aus materiellen Zeugnissen erschliessen lassen.
