Description In our international world, encountering different languages has become part of everyday life. Be it in oral communication or written areas: We often deal with several languages and must consider how - with the help of concrete linguistic forms - to convey content. At the same time, ever-improving translation tools, such as machine translation, are available for this purpose. Do they help us satisfactorily translate from one language into another? To answer this question, we have to analyze the content, languages involved, and linguistic structure more comprehensively and should at least include context and medium.
This lecture sets out to provide an insight into the interdisciplinary world of translation studies, focusing specifically on the role of linguistics and its various methods but also taking a broader view into related disciplines and application areas. In linguistics, we will consider, among other things, the question of content by looking at the phenomenon of the untranslatability of certain realia at connotations or associations. With the help of the contrastive approach, we will discuss similarities and differences between languages on the level of linguistic units (grammar, syntax, lexis). The communicative-functional approach extends the range of topics to include context and, thus, pragmatic aspects. These topics will first be presented cross-linguistic and then applied to the language pair Russian-German.
In the second part of the lecture, we will widen the view by considering interdisciplinarity and giving examples for practical applications. We will gain insight into different contexts of translational activities, e.g., spontaneous oral interpretation or written literary translation. The product - the translated text - also plays a role, as it transcends language boundaries and can, in turn, become an object of study on its own.

This lecture is held in co-teaching (by lecturers from Slavic Linguistics and Literary Studies). It is open to all interested BA and MA students and participants from other disciplines (sociolinguistics, Eastern European studies, etc.).
