Russian-speaking Writers in a German-speaking World: The Translation of Literary Texts at the Intersection of Linguistics and Literary Studies (Seminar MA) |

Multilingual writers, their relationship to their languages, and the influence of multilingualism on their artistic work have already been the subject of several scholarly remarks. There are innumerable reasons for the choice of one or another language in their work. What is clear is that language and work do not stand in any arbitrary relationship. This intrinsically complex relationship may underlie the influence of extra-linguistic factors, as is (repeatedly) visible in the present: The discourse in German-speaking countries about the Russian war against Ukraine influences the current social perception of everything associated with Russia, including the Russian language. In this context, we can often observe an equation of the Russian language with Russia (and Russian political decisions), which ignores the fact that Russian is a world language with a diverse and international language culture. What consequences can such a perception have for language workers in a multilingual context who consider Russian as (one of) their mother tongue(s) and have their center of life in another country?
In this seminar, we will focus on individual contemporary Russian-speaking authors living in German-speaking exile and examine their language attitudes on the one hand and their literary texts written in Russian on the other. A central part will be the translation of those texts from Russian into German. The translation work will take place in small groups. Each group shall translate a literary text that is not yet available in German, discuss and revise this translation, and finally produce a version for publication. The plan is to publish a bilingual volume containing the original Russian texts and their German translations resulting from the seminar. This project seminar focuses on joint translation work and intensive engagement with a text and his/her author. It takes place in co-teaching with lecturers from Slavic Linguistics and Literary Studies. |
