Title VA: The Late Bronze Age – A Period of Globalization
Description The Late Bronze Age was a period of globalisation of the then known civilised world from the Eastern Mediterranean to the Indus valley and from Central Asia to the Arabian Peninsula. Interregional long-distance trade, including intensified maritime trade, ensured an exchange of goods and ideas within this large area. The great empires of this time – the Hittite Empire in Anatolia, Mycenaean Greece, Cyprus, Egypt’s New Kingdom, the Mittani Empire, Assyria, Cassite Babylonia and Elam in Iran – were engaged in intensive diplomatic exchange, which led to the rapid spread of cuneiform writing and the Akkadian language as a lingua franca. The cuneiform archive of the pharaohs Amenophis III and Akhenaten, found in Tell el-Amarna in Egypt, provides eloquent information about this. The seminar provides an insight into this culture and explores the question of an international style of art of this time.
