Title The Archaeology of Violence
Description Is man a wolf to himself? Archaeological remains, pictorial sources, and texts tell us about past acts of violence that took place in both public and private spaces. But the temporal distance and the heterogeneity of the record raise questions: How can these sources be interpreted without modern bias and within their respective archaeological and
culturalhistorical contexts? What forms of violence can be observed in the sources? How are
historical events and the condensation of visual and narrative representations of violence
interrelated?

In this block seminar, students will learn an interdisciplinary and comparative methodology
for evaluating archaeological, philological, and iconographic sources.

In May, students will participate in a workshop with selected experts and discuss the topic in
an interdisciplinary framework.

The course is aimed at students of all archaeological disciplines. Students from other disciplines are welcome.
