Title To Be or Not to Be: Religions’ Engagement with Death
Description Dealing with death, dying and related phenomena is a relevant field of religious studies, which, in addition to different traditions and cultures, also includes a variety of research approaches. The seminar will not only provide an overview of various ideas about the afterlife and connected rituals but will also build a bridge from historical case studies and their characteristic elements, such as Spiritualism in the 19th century, to modern phenomena such as Near-Death Experiences and virtual approaches to death, dying and religion and how to deal with them scientifically. The students are also introduced to the respective contexts, possible theories and methods that can be helpful in the analysis.
