Title |
Optics |
Description |
We begin with Maxwell's equations and the wave equation and derive their solutions in vacuum and a linear medium such as glasses or crystals. Then we formulate the propagation of localized wavepackets (spatial and temporal) through those media. This will lead to important concepts in optics, namely Geometrical Optics, Gauss Optics, and Fourier Optics. With these tools we then analyze a selection of modern optical applicatins, such as waveguides (optical fibers), optical data transmission, and last but not least quantum optics. During the excersises students will work on semester long projects which relate to the course material and aim to show the wide range of applications of optics in science and daily life. |
