In most countries, selling and buying kidneys is prohibited, while donating a kidney is seen as a moral act. This is an example of a "repugnant" or "noxious" market. In this seminar, we will try to understand why some markets are repugnant, what are the consequences of such repugnance, and what are the consequences of different policy options with regard to these markets

Book
This seminar is based on the book "Why some things should not be for sale" by Debra Satz, Oxford University Press, 2010.

Required readings
- Class 2: Satz, Chapters 1, 4 and 9.
- Class 3: Satz, Chapters 5 and 6.
- Class 4: Reports by groups 1 and 2, feedback by groups 3 and 4.
- Class 5: Reports by groups 3 and 4, feedback by groups 5 and 6.
- Class 6: Reports by groups 5 and 6, feedback by groups 1 and 2.

Reports
In a group, you should prepare a report on a repugnant market of your choice. It cannot be a market discussed in Satz's book, or a market already selected by a different group. Markets are selected on a first come, first served basis.

Your report should be roughly 10 pages and should contain:

- background information on the market;
- information on the current legal framework in Switzerland, the EU, the US and other countries of interest;
- an analysis of potential negative aspects of allowing the market under consideration;
- an analysis of potential positive aspects of allowing the market under consideration;
- your conclusion on what the appropriate legal framework should be.

Feedback
Your feedback should be 4-5 pages long and should critique the report of the group following the same structure of the report. For each section, you should explain whether it is clear and complete, and if not, explain what additional information or analysis you would suggest. Additionally, provide suggestions for additional sources that the group could use. Finally, provide a list of possible discussion topics that the group could bring up during their discussion.

Discussion

The discussion class starts with a brief presentation of the report (6 min; the group that wrote the report). The presentation is purely oral, no slides allowed. Next is a presentat
