Title |
Mindfulness in and as education |
Description |
Content: Mindfulness in and as education has become an increasingly prominent topic. This seminar offers an excellent opportunity to engage with this emerging and interdisciplinary field of research. We will critically examine the experience and scientific study of mindfulness, explore relevant research questions, analyze methods and findings from effectiveness and implementation research in (higher) education, as well as adress the historical contextualization of mindfulness in schools and education.
The seminar is structured according to the tradition of Contemplative Studies and covers three approaches. First, students will gain direct experience with mindfulness by exploring and practicing various meditation techniques and contemplative approaches to reflect on its personal impact (FIRST-PERSON APPROACH; how does mindfulness affect me?). Second, students will engage in peer discussions about their mindfulness experiences, guide mindfulness excercies, and participate in group discussions to deepen their understanding (SECOND-PERSON APPROACH; how does mindfulness affect others/us?). Third, students will read psychological and neuroscientific texts to develop a modern understanding of mindfulness, as well as humanities-based (philosophical/historical) texts to contextualize contemporary perspectives on mindfulness (THIRD-PERSON APPROACH; what does science say about mindfulness?).
Requirements: This seminar requires a high level of continuous and active participation. Throughout the semester, students will be introduced to various mindfulness exercises and will be invited to reflect on their experiences. In each session (1 x 4 lessons and 3 x 6 lessons), an interactive exchange about the English literature is expected. In addition, students will take over part of each seminar session as experts in small groups, guide mindfulness exercises, and research and present empirical studies. Finally, students will develop a research question and answer it based on empirical studies that they have researched themselves. As part of the written assignment, a reflection on the writing process is expected ("Documentation of Peer/Instructor Consultation" or "Reflection Task on Artificial Intelligence (AI)"). For the grading of the 5 ECTS, the expert input in small groups including presentations as well as the written assignment will be considered (reflection on the writing process and reflection on mindfulness only pass/fail). No more than 4 missed lessons.
