Title Development of children with a chronic disease - A
Description Content: Medical advances mean that children with chronic illnesses now have much better long-term and, in some cases, even good development prospects than in the past. Nevertheless, illnesses such as asthma, leukemia, and epilepsy pose major challenges for the children themselves, but also for their parents, in terms of treatment, disease management, and long-term care and coping.
The aim of the seminar is to provide students with specialist knowledge about the development of children suffering from these diseases, to sensitize them to the challenges that the diseases entail, and to familiarize them with developmental psychological stressors and protective factors. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to learn about health-promoting and psychoeducational measures in families, kindergartens, and schools, and to discuss these critically. The seminar will be a mixture of face-to-face sessions and home study/independent work.
The in-person sessions will take place on the following dates: February 18, March 4, March 18, April 1, April 22, May 6, and May 20, 2026.

Requirements: The seminar will be structured so that in the first part of each session, facts about the clinical picture that have been compiled will be compared and supplemented. Using case studies, the second part will focus on the long-term cognitive and social-emotional development of affected children and adolescents, family stressors, and developmental psychological support and counseling.

Fact sheets must be uploaded to Ilias by Monday of the week in which the clinical picture is discussed at the latest (pass/fail, the fact sheets will not be graded).

The acquisition of the 5 ECTS requires (a) regular, active participation, (b) six fact sheets submitted on time, (c) passing an oral exam in May/June 2026.

The grade for the 5 ECTS credits will be determined based on performance in the 25-minute oral exam.
Detailed information on the performance assessments will be provided in the first seminar session. The dates for the oral exams are listed above.

Literature: The literature search and fact sheets should be done using artificial intelligence.
Registration: Registration must be done via KSL.
Study focus: Master's module in developmental psychology or health psychology (15, 30, or 45 ECTS) as well as a compulsory elective.
There is the option of writing a seminar paper in addition.
