Title Authority (MA Lecture, BA and MA Lecture International Students: Language & Linguistics and Literature) (GRADED)
Description Amid political polarisation, institutional distrust, and emerging struggles over voice and legitimacy, the notion of authority defines much of today’s social landscape. This interdisciplinary lecture series brings together literary and linguistic approaches to examine how authority is built, circulated, and contested through language, texts, and culture.
The course explores literary sites of authority — such as narrative voice, persuasion, or representation, the power of the canon, the role of aesthetic form and the dynamics of authorship — alongside those of linguistics and communication studies, specifically manifestations of power in political discourse, institutional processes, and language change. Lectures consider how texts and communicative acts confer validity, mobilise belief, or sustain systems of dominance, as well as how they become tools of resistance, critique, or reinvention.
In addition to lectures by members of the English Department on authority in e.g., modern dystopian novels, the Middle Ages, and state legal procedure, the series includes two guest speakers offering further literary and linguistics perspectives on the topic.
