CANCELED - Studying studies: A critical evaluation of digital psychology studies |
| Description |
In this seminar, we critically engage with scientific publications in the field of digitalization in psychology. We review fundamental concepts of the philosophy of science and reflect on methodological issues such as Type I and Type II errors, effect sizes, appropriate sample sizes, and the validity of psychological constructs. Furthermore, we discuss the importance of theories and mechanisms, with a particular focus on the influence of confounders. Another key emphasis lies on modern standards of research quality, including replication studies, registered reports, and pre-registrations, which promote transparency and reproducibility in psychological research. The goal is to develop a deeper understanding of critical evaluation and the current state of research in the context of the digital transformation of psychology. Throughout the semester, we will apply these skills by discussing studies in a format similar to a journal club. The examination will consist of a seminar paper. |
