Title BA Seminar/Research Seminar: Theatre and Prostitution (W, K; H, T, Ä)
Description In anti-theatre writings, theatre as an institution and art form is often metaphorically branded as a venue for prostitution and a medium of seduction. Around 1900, the discourse on prostitution in relation to theatre intensified. In her study Das Theater der Prostitution. Über die Ökonomie des Begehrens im Theater um 1900 und der Gegenwart (The Theatre of Prostitution: On the Economy of Desire in Theatre around 1900 and Today) (2014), Melanie Hinz interprets this intensified discourse as a ‘discourse on theatre audiences and their relationship to and desire for theatre’ (p. 113).
A distinction must be made between metaphorical discourse on theatre as prostitution and social discourse on prostitution in the theatre, which takes into account the socio-historical factors and facts that led to the voluntary or forced sex work of actresses or to prostitution in the theatre.
The Master's seminar is dedicated to the examination of both the metaphorical and social discourse on theatre and prostitution, as well as the associated aesthetic, social, economic and gender-specific issues.
