| Title |
Music in the 14th and 15th centuries: Between the Black Death and white notes. |
| Description |
Between 1346 and 1353, the plague raged from the southern and eastern Mediterranean to the northwesternmost Baltic Sea. A third of the population at the time, an estimated 25 million people, were carried away by the Black Death. Entire regions and cities were depopulated; it was a catastrophe of apocalyptic proportions, which can be felt in the background of works such as Boccaccio's Decameron. Yet, the plague is only one of the catastrophes that shaped the period between 1300 and 1500. Climate change, famines, waves of plague, an unending war, and a schism in the church that was as loud as it was paralyzing challenged people physically and psychologically. Neverthel |
