Title Scientific and Ethnographic Photography: From Theory to Practice (BA Workshop)
Description A knowledge of photography is just as important as that of the alphabet. The illiterate of the future will be ignorant of the use of camera and pen alike. (László Moholy-Nagy, 1923)

The first myth to dispel about ‘theory’ is the idea that we can do without it. There is no untheoretical way to see photography. While some people may think of theory as the work of reading difficult essays by European intellectuals, all practices presuppose a theory. (David Bate, 2009)

This special workshop offers a limited number of students an applied, hands-on learning experience focused on the practice of scientific and ethnographic photography. The course is offered by professional photographer and photojournalist Daniel Rihs. Provided within the framework of the SNSF-funded Articulating Rubbish project, the course will be conceptually and thematically organized under the rubric of “visualizing waste”. Students will work with photographic materials supplied by Mr Rihs but will also be expected to collect and edit their own photographic materials. In addition to a series of regular 90-minute sessions, students will be expected to participate in two one-day intensive sessions working closely with Mr Rihs to generate and produce their own scientific/ethnographic photography; this work will be curated and showcased in an exhibition on the last day of the workshop.

Required Reading: There will be some general framing readings provided; these will all be emailed as PDFs once the English department’s registration has closed on 01 February 2026. You are expected always to have completed the readings in advance and come prepared to discuss them in class.
