BA-GLS SP2: Pick a pilgrim, play the Hajj: experience, history, and gamification |
| Description |
Princess, Soldier, Sufi, Bride: pick a character and join the Hajj Trail - an online game that lets you see and understand in new ways what it meant to make the pilgrimage to Mecca in the 16th and 17th century. The game - a passion project developed by a group of talented scholars - is based on a rich selection of historical sources, and the course explores the potential of this format for learning about the Islamic Pilgrimage in historical context. Regular assigments include playing the game, documenting milestones, and reflecting on the chosen character's progress and experiences on the long and arduous caravan journey in multiple media. In preparation for and alongside this gamified streak, the seminar will review and discuss academic literature and (translated) source material. Throughout, the Hajj will be situated in relation to several frameworks: the inner-Islamic, normative perspective (5 pillars, manāsik); a comparative approach to pilgrimage across cultures and religions; an historical view intent on contextualization; and finally a contemporary lens focusing on subjective experience. |
