| Title |
Jewish American Poetry (MA Seminar Literature) (Open to World Literature) |
| Description |
Jewish American poets have contributed to American poetry for a long time. The rise of what may be called Jewish American poetry, however, is a relatively recent development. What does it mean when previously supposedly isolated voices appear to coalesce into a distinct tradition? How may this tradition be described? How can its specificity be established? How can the danger of essentialism be skirted? What are the repercussions for the larger phenomenon of American poetry? In this seminar, we will discuss these and more questions with particular focus inter alia on thematic preoccupations, poetic forms, cross-cultural fertilization, and cultural sustainability as well as on that most elusive and problematic of terms: Jewishness.
Required Reading: A text reader will be made available on ILIAS prior to the beginning of the semester. |
