| Title |
Hollywood: Words, Moving Images, and Music (MA Seminar Literature) |
| Description |
Hollywood, if Marilyn Monroe is to be believed, “is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul.” Maybe. Certainly, the influence of the glitzy cradle of innumerable movies has been second to none, not only in America. In this collaborative seminar, co-taught by the Institute of Musicology and the Department of English, we will look in detail at the various components contributing to a choice of Hollywood movies from different genres and periods. How do words, moving images, and music complement each other? Can they be understood on their own or only in conjunction with one another? We will moreover delve into questions of adaptation by exploring how literary texts were turned into big cinema; as the popular writer Stephen King observed, “books and movies are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but taste completely different.” In this seminar, we will not only taste of both fruits, but flavor them with the sweetness of music—pineapple? papaya? mango?...
