Title «Under (the) cover(s)». Exploring sexuality in the modern age.
Description What is sexuality, and where does it begin? How can we understand and describe it in historical terms? What becomes visible in the sources, and what remains hidden or unnamed? This source course explores the history of sexuality and builds on the research that has developed and diversified over the past thirty years. This enables us to learn about and reflect on various aspects of sexuality: There is no such thing as ‘one’ sexuality; we can understand it as a melting pot between desire and reproduction. It is determined by knowledge, taboos and prohibitions that have shifted historically, thus becoming a catalyst for social developments. During the course, we will work with a variety of sources from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries that deal with sexuality in many different forms — not only written texts, but also images, films, and objects. Our main focus will be on Europe, but we will also consider transnational perspectives. By analyzing these sources, students will learn the basics of historical source criticism and analysis — key skills in the work of any historian. We will discuss different approaches and methods used in the history of sexuality and think critically about their possibilities and limitations.
