| Title |
VA: Burials in the Ancient Near East |
| Description |
The seminar focuses on burial practices in the Near East, as evidenced by grave contexts. The location, architecture and type of tomb, as well as the grave inventories, can provide insight into how the living dealt with death. Graves and burial rites must always be considered within their social and cultural contexts. The seminar will therefore compare selected burial contexts from different regions of the Near East. The chronological focus will be on the 3rd and 2nd millennia BCE, but this can be extended according to participants' interests.
The seminar will address the following questions:
• What can individual findings tell us about burial rituals?
• To what extent are social and cultural identities expressed in funerary contexts?
• Are certain rituals, such as commemorating the dead, caring for the dead, or ancestor worship, verifiable?
In addition to mortuary contexts, iconographic representations, texts and bioarchaeological investigations will also be discussed. |
