| Title |
The beginning of the Neolithic period in northern Mesopotamia and south-eastern Anatolia |
| Description |
The seminar will examine the processes that led to the emergence of the Neolithic way of life in its place of origin, northern Mesopotamia and south-eastern Anatolia. It will focus on the external and internal factors that brought about the process of sedentarisation. In addition, the settlement and subsistence patterns that followed the earliest domestication of plants and animals will be examined, as will the material remains taking into account current research, methods and theories on processes of neolithisation. This is followed by a discussion of how the earliest Neolithic ways of life emerged in southern and central Europe during the 8th to 7th millennia BCE.
The findings from Göbekli Tepe and Taştepeler, which are currently being investigated, will play a significant role in this context.
Accompanying the seminar are short excursions to Berlin to see the exhibition ‘Built Community. Göbeklitepe, Taş Tepeler and Life 12,000 Years Ago’ (https://www.smb.museum/museen-einrichtungen/james-simon-galerie/ausstellungen/detail/gebaute-gemeinschaft/) and to Turkey to visit the sites discussed. |
