| Title |
Basics and concepts of Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine |
| Description |
Health Psychology and its application in the field of somatic diseases is concerned with prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. In addition, Health Psychology develops models and investigates in scientific research. Overall, Health Psychology is concerned with the integration of various scientific disciplines. Health Psychology aims at identifying physiological, behavioral, and subjective factors in medical problems. In the context of an interdisciplinary approach of health and disease a bio-psycho-social model is favored.
The content lies mainly on somatic disorders (e.g. cardiologic problems), on physiological changes and somatic diseases but with a focus on psychological factors and disorders. Therefore, stress plays a major role in Health Psychology.
In chronic conditions and diseases healing is not the main outcome. Instead, Behavioral Medicine stresses the reduction of risk behavior and coping facilities for self-management.
The topics include immunological diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic pain, diseases of the central neuronal system, diseases of the gastrointestinal system, cardiological diseases, dermatological problems, and cancer.
