MA-Seminar SP2: Gender and Sexuality in the Middle East |
| Description |
This course aims at looking at the history of the Middle East from a gender perspective, making students acquainted with research methods in the field and with historiographical challenges and solutions. The course presents an overview from the rise of Islam up to the contemporary period.
In the course we will read some of the “classics” on gender and sexuality in the Middle East, while discussing what Leila Ahmad called “the founding discourses” on gender and Islam, the impact of modernity on gender and sexuality, the emergence of feminisms in the Middle East, LGBTQI studies and masculinity studies.
Teaching format:
Seminar (2 hours/week)
This course is interactive, and will consist of a combination of lectures and discussions. In order for the class to be successful and for you to learn effectively, you must have completed the assigned readings before the class. This will ensure that you are able to participate actively in class discussions and activities. Please bring a hard copy of the readings with you at the class (or bring it on a digital device like a tablet or a computer).
To be admitted to the final evaluation, you should have fulfilled all the study requirements.
Every week the session leaders will prepare questions on the text that will be uploaded on Ilias (in the forum) one week in advance. Students are required to answer these questions till the Thursday before the class take place at 12.
Acting as discussant
In this course, instead than classical class presentation, you are requested to act as a discussant during one session. According to the number of students, one or two students will have to act as discussants for each class. The discussant is in charge of shortly introducing the reading and the author to the colleagues, and of providing some initial discussion points for the class to stimulate the debate.
Moreover, the discussant of a text is in charge of preparing and uploading on the forum questions on the text they are assigned, of reading the answers of his/her colleagues in advance, and of giving feedback on them.
Expert groups
During the first session, the class will be divided into groups according to a specific area of interest within the wider field of Gender and Sexuality in the Middle East.
Each group will be in charge of identifying and reading an adequate number of relevant contributions that show the current research trends in that specific field.
Each group should read and discuss these articles during the semester.
In the second part of the course, the groups will present a synthesis of these readings to the other students (group “Referat” with Handout).
If you prefer, instead of a “Handout” you can produce another kind of output (a short review article where you summarize the main directions in the research; a poster; prepare a short film; write a conceptual map).
For example, a group could also decide to use these articles and reinterpret them in an artistic way.
There are no limits to your fantasy, but there are time limits: your presentation or output should not take more than 30 minutes from the class!
We will reserve one class of the course to the first preparations for the group work. You will not have assigned readings for that class.
