Title |
Anglo-American Law: A Foundational Course in Legal English |
Description |
Legal institutions, law firms, and companies worldwide increasingly need lawyers with a working knowledge of both the civil law and common law systems. This course will familiarize students with the common law approach by conveying the fundamental principles of Anglo-American law. The course will cover U.S. legal structures and explain how certain concepts evolved from the earlier common law of England. In addition to developing their legal language skills, students will learn to analyze judicial opinions (including landmark cases) and to understand the function of precedent in common law jurisdictions.
Class will meet on Zoom, live, during the regular class time. Because attendance may need to be limited to preserve the interactive nature of the course, please send an e-mail to april.stockfleet@iwr.unibe.ch, between September 1 and September 22, if you would like to attend the course. Your email should include your name, student number, program (Bachelor's, Master's, LL.M., Exchange Student and School, etc.), and your study level (semester number). Once you have done that, you will be added to the ILIAS system for the class.
The oral exams will be held online via Zoom. |
