Title |
Early child development and child-rearing: A WEIRD concept? |
Description |
Content: Most developmental psychology literature is based on WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich; Democratic) samples, and the question arises how firmly such findings can be transferred to other cultures. Especially when it comes to child-rearing, there are significant cultural differences and strong opinions about what is best for a child's development. Should children be breastfed for two years or only for six months? Should children sleep in their bed as early as possible or stay in the family bed? This proseminar provides multicultural perspectives on four different early childhood education practices: breastfeeding, motor development, sleep, primary caregivers.
Requirement: Attending the proseminar is highly demanding: Independent reading of the basic literature, weekly assessments, and continuous seminar attendance (max. 2 missed dates) is required. In the practical part of the course, an interview must be conducted. The course will be evaluated with a written seminar paper, which consists of a group part (50%) and an individual contribution (50%).
