Root number 100329
Semester HS2023
Type of course Block Course
Allocation to subject Ecology and Evolution
Type of exam not defined
Title Conservation biology, research practical
Description Field part is organised during the summer holidays (10 days in July or early August); lab part is organised during the fall semester. See detailed programme in ILIAS. Registration in ILIAS. Dates for the field part may change.

The aim of this practical is to render you more acquainted with the various methods and techniques of population ecology and community ecology - both in the field and in the lab - which are relevant to the type of conservation research that is carried out by our group on threatened species, communities and ecosystems. Acridids and Tettigoniidae will be used as main study models. The practical consists of two parts: field work (10 days in Valais, in Finges/Pfyn; in July-August depending on the years) and laboratory work (5 days during the fall semester, Unibe), see dates below. Note that the field part is thus planned during the summer holidays (July-August), i.e. well before the semester starts. It is intended for students starting their third year of study (BSc; 5th semester) or students enrolling in a MSc programme within the Division of Conservation Biology at Unibe. The participation to the R course that is organised at the start of the fall semester start is an absolute prerequisite to this practical (both field and lab part).
