Der Erste Weltkrieg gilt als "Urkatastrophe der 20. Jahrhunderts" (George Kennan) mit Zügen eines "Totalen Krieges" (Erich Ludendorff). Er führte in politischer, militärischer, sozialer und kultureller Hinsicht zu nachhaltigen Umwälzungen. Insbesondere das Gesicht Mittel- und Osteuropas hatte sich in dessen Verlauf grundlegend verändert. |
