Evolutionary history of arthropods, lecture |
Description |
Weeks 8-14.
Arthropods are the most diverse phylum of living beings and contain more than 80% of all described animal species. The lecture gives an overview of the most frequently discussed hypotheses on arthropod phylogeny. The major arthropod taxa (chelicerates, millipedes, centipedes, crustaceans, and insects) and the most important groups within these taxa are introduced. Their habits and bauplans are discussed in detail with regard to function, adaptation, life history, and evolution. In addition, the enigmatic velvet worms and tardigrades are included. |
