Title |
Buddhist Philosophy and Tibetan Art: Reflections on Artistic Practice and Spiritual Inquiry |
Description |
This course explores the deep interconnections between Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan art, focusing on the ways in which artistic practice and spiritual inquiry mutually influence and enrich each other. Students will delve into the philosophical foundations of Buddhism and its impact on the creation and interpretation of Tibetan art. By examining various forms of Tibetan art, including thangka paintings, mandalas, sculpture, and ritual objects, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the symbiotic relationship between art and spirituality in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Through critical analysis and comparisons with Christian-European understandings of the relationship of religion, philosophy, and art, through discussions, and excursions to museums and exhibitions of Tibetan Buddhist art, students will gain insights into the profound philosophical concepts embedded within Tibetan art and how they contribute to spiritual inquiry and personal transformation. |
