Title |
BA Seminar: Language situation(s) in the Balkans |
Description |
Hardly any other region in Europe consists of as many different languages and cultures as the Balkans. From a linguistic point of view, languages from at least five language groups (Albanian, Greek, Slavic, Romance, and Turkish) have been spoken there throughout history, not to mention a multitude of several oral dialects. The emergence of the Balkan sprachbund is due to these languages being spoken in close proximity for centuries. On the written level, the diversity is also impressively demonstrated by the use of different alphabets, including the old Slavic script of Glagolitic, which is currently experiencing a kind of renaissance (cf. the minting of the Croatian euro coins 1, 2, and 5 cents).
The aim of this seminar is to take a closer look at the different language situations in the Balkans at different epochs and to analyze them in their complexity. On the one hand, the question of the use of which languages at which time by which groups and for what purpose (synchronic language situation of a concrete area) will be examined, and on the other hand, the focus will be on how concrete languages - here the focus is on the South Slavic languages and dialects - changed diachronically, were influenced and stood in a changing relationship of rapprochement and differentiation to each other and still do today. In this way, the complex historical and current language situation in the Balkans will be analysed.
In the seminar, a joint discussion will alternate with topical group work. The students will deal with a concrete question (historical, current/synchronous, or diachronic) in more depth and present their results at the end (probably in the form of a poster). |
