All lectures are taught in English. All handouts and readings are in English.
Economists rely extensively on models in order to gain understanding of how the world works, to offer policy advice and to forecast the future. Most models can only be solved numerically on a computer. This course aims to introduce students to the basics of two popular, powerful, programming languages, Matlab and Python, that are commonly used to solve problems in economics (and elsewhere). This basic knowledge is applied to various subjects such as data analysis and financial economics (bank loans, investment portfolios).
The classes are organized as follows. After presenting a concept/procedure, we solve some examples. We then ask the students to solve similar exercises in order to help them master the procedure.
The exam is open book (but without internet access).
The course material consists of class notes as well as free guides and reference books.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites other than having completed the first year of studies.

This course requires registration and the number of slots are limited.

For registration, please write an e-mail to ulrike.dowidat@unibe.ch between August 22 and September 12, 2023 with the following information:
- First name, last name
- registration number (exchange students: EU-...)
- Major in economics (yes / no)
- If not majoring in economics, state your major
- Complete first year (yes / no)
- Semester of study
If the course is oversubscribed, priority will be given to students who have economics as their major and who are in their third year of the BA program. (on a first come-first serve basis). Participants will receive a confirmation mail by September, 15th, 2023
Location
The course is held in the computer pool of the Economics Department (PC Pool A322, UniS, 3rd floor) on Fridays from 14.15-17.00h.
