Introduction to Precision Optics |
Description |
The attendance in the monitorings of achievements of objectives is mandatory (please see schedule). Attendance in the other parts of the lectures is voluntary.
The course is separated into self studies, i.e. inverted classroom as preparation, lectures, case studies and exercises as well as monitorings of achievements of objectives during the lectures.
PREREQUISITES
Basic knowledge in ray- and wave- optics for Bachelor courses
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
• Laptop is recommended
• The attendance in the lectures is recommended
• The course will include two excursion into optical labs:
08.11.2024: Institute of Applied Physics, University of Bern
13.12.2024: Institute for Applied Laser, Photonics and Surface Technologies, Bern University of Applied Sciences
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course will introduce the basics in optics with a focus on precision optics for applications. The addressed topics are:
• Basics of light: Wavelength, frequency, amplitude, phase, intensity, photon energy and momentum, fluence, average power, peak power, polarization states and polarization optics including Jones calculus
• Spatial and temporal coherence and its application in interferometry
• Propagation of light: Description of optical elements with matrices, ray-, Gauss- and Fourier optics
• Optical components: Light sources, lasers, passive and active components, photodetectors
• Light - matter interaction: Reflection, transmission, absorption (linear and non linear), electrons and nuclei, heat conduction and two temperature model |
