Title |
Advanced Performance Measurement: Concepts and Cases |
Description |
Modern firms have access to more data than ever before. Being able to analyse their data efficiently is thus crucial for them to be successful. This course will help students to learn how to apply empirical methods to measure and evaluate performance of actions, individuals, and corporate functions. The content of the course revolves around two core aspects. First, students will use managerial case studies to see how management problems can be solved using data and empirical methods. To do this, students will learn to run empirical analyses in practice, using Stata during the course. The underlying goal is for students to understand the insights that statistical analyses can provide but also their limitations. Second, students will read and critically discuss the most recent managerial accounting research on performance measurement. The objective of this class is to teach students to use data to answer practical business questions, but also to be able to identify typical challenges surrounding the drawing of causal inferences in general.
Students are expected to participate actively in class. Participation is graded. Students who want to participate must register in KSL, see also Syllabus on the IUC Homepage. The class is taught in English. The class is taught over a full day, every Friday, to allow for meaningful interactions, and to usefully connect data analysis with paper discussions.
This class can be usefully combined with the “incentives and control systems” seminar in managerial accounting. |
