Title Suicidal Ideation and Behavior in the Clinical Context – Models, Assessment, Documentation, and Intervention
Description Working with individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors is one of the most challenging tasks in clinical practice. It requires careful assessment of both the current and long-term suicidal experience. Where necessary, further protective measures must be taken to ensure patient safety. Individuals with a history of suicide attempts are at significantly higher risk of future attempts or suicide. This highlights the importance of appropriate treatment and a professional, well-informed approach to this high-risk group.
This seminar focuses on key statistics and facts, as well as on major theoretical models of suicidality. Special attention will be given to three core competencies essential for working with suicidal patients: therapeutic competence, assessment competence, and documentation competence.
Additional focal points of the seminar include structured assessment, professional documentation, and therapeutic interventions. There will also be space to explore selected special topics such as the impact of media and the care of specific populations (e.g., adolescents, older adults, LGBTQIA+ individuals).
Based on current scientific literature, the topics covered will be further explored, summarized, and discussed by the students. Thematic assignments will be introduced during the first session and distributed among participants. Students will then independently work on their topics—individually or in small groups—and present their findings in a 30-minute presentation.
Presentations should include interactive elements, such as film clips, book excerpts, exercises, or discussion prompts, in order to encourage an engaging and practice-oriented learning environment. A curated selection of literature will be provided for each topic.
