Title |
The ‘age of the liberated woman’? Women in the 20th century between oppression and emancipation. |
Description |
Women came to the forefront in the 20th century: not only did they gain suffrage in most countries around the world, but they also became more visible as consumers and engaged in independent employment. At the same time, women continued to serve as housewives, and within the context of science, women, their bodies, and their achievements were rendered invisible. Therefore, the question of "who" a woman is is not a biological fact. Rather, in the 20th century, various actors shaped social power relations and orders that also influenced ideas about gender, sexuality, race, disability, and social class.
In this Proseminar, we will examine the historical contingency of "women" together. We will learn about different historical methods and theories that allow us to analyze and understand how spaces were assigned to women and how they fought to claim them. These approaches make visible the power relations women experienced, question gender as an analytical category, highlight the female body and its emotions, and demonstrate the intersectionality of what it means to be a woman. |
