Title |
Galicia: A multi-faceted region in Eastern Europe from the mid-19th century to the end of the First World War |
Description |
The proseminar as an introduction to the study of history deals with the region of Galicia in Eastern Europe. Between 1772 and 1918, it was a province within the Habsburg Monarchy, which included a number of characteristics such as multi-ethnicity, the coexistence of numerous religions, sometimes great poverty among the rural population and multilingualism. From the middle of the 19th century onwards, there were more and more descriptions of this special region, where some important writers lived.
Cities such as Lviv or Brody were benchmarks for reforms and a departure into the modern age. The diversity of Galicia's history lends itself to different approaches to history such as social and economic history, Eastern Jewish history, the relationship between empire and periphery, the significance of regions and change from the middle of the 19th century onwards, as well as the significance of the First World War. The proseminar is aimed at those interested in general and Eastern European history. The accompanying tutorial, which is compulsory, teaches the basics of academic work.
