Title BA-Seminar: Multilingualism and Identity in German Rap – Linguistic Practices of Eastern European Rappers
Description German-language rap represents a complex linguistic domain where diverse societal realities, affiliations, and language practices converge. In this seminar, we examine how language contact, migration experiences, and multilingualism are reflected in German rap, and the linguistic structures, dynamics, and discourses associated with them. Our focus will be on performers who have migrated from an Eastern European country or are first-generation or 1.5-generation migrants.
We use rap lyrics as the primary data source to analyze the artistically shaped language of often marginalized speakers, such as those from migrant communities or socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. Linguistic phenomena such as multiethnolects, code-switching, lexical innovations, and symbolic language use will be central to the analysis.
The seminar combines theoretical foundations (including topics such as language contact, sociolects, ethnolects, and language ideologies) with empirical engagement: students will create their own small corpus and analyze linguistically relevant excerpts using the methods discussed in the seminar.
A particular emphasis will be placed on how language in German rap constructs identity, facilitates positioning, and marks social belonging – and how such linguistic practices are embedded in societal debates about norms, deviation, "proper" German, and linguistic legitimacy.
The seminar will take place biweekly. Additionally, we will meet on two Saturdays in November at the University’s Ideenlabor to collaboratively work on the corpus we will have developed. Your results will be presented in the final session as part of a concluding presentation.
