Title |
Sermon and Film (Homiletics) |
Description |
An inspiring sermon is like great cinema. Cinema in your head. It creates scenes in the minds of the listeners, taking them on a journey with twists and turns, detours and easy paths. Sometimes it leads them along scenic trails at lofty heights, sometimes through gentle valleys. Good sermons are like good films: they are dramas with crises and climaxes, surprising twists and happy coincidences. Sometimes they zoom in close, as if with a camera, then widen the view to the horizon and beyond. They captivate the listeners, touching and moving them. Anyone who delivers a sermon in such a way that it touches the listeners must see and experience the scene being described. Only then can it come alive in the interactive space and resonate with the listeners.
This seminar is not only about the metaphorical proximity of sermons and films and what sermons can learn from films, but also about how actual films and film scenes can be incorporated into sermons or how sermons can refer to them. It is about film sermons in very different variations and intensities of reference.
At the same time, we will work together to develop the basic homiletic perspectives of each sermon: from exegesis to systematic theological reflection, the homiletic situation and the liturgical and church year context, to the rhetorical form and performance of the presentation.
In the seminar, we will deal with all relevant aspects of the sermon, fundamentally and concretely, theoretically and practically, using examples and our own attempts. All participants will conceive, write, present and reflect on a sermon.
The course has an overall workshop character. The process of developing a sermon is reflected upon and accompanied step by step. Guests who have dealt intensively with films and religion will be invited to report on their preaching practice. |
